Backcountry 101 Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - PUBLIC EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT Local Event Offers Introduction to Backcountry Horsemanship and Packing El Cajon, Calif. - April 27, 2001 - The second annual Backcountry 101 event will be held June 23, 2001, at the Granville Martin Museum in Descanso, just off Highway 8. This annual event provides workshops on Gentle Use and Leave No Trace principles, Packing, Horse Camping, Backcountry Etiquette, Equine First Aid, On-Trail Hoof Care, Saddle Fitting, and Camp Cooking. If you've ever dreamed of riding in our local backcountry, travelling the length of the California Riding and Hiking trail with a pack animal, or camping in the wilderness of the high Sierras, Backcountry Horsemen of California (BCHC) can help you get started, at Backcountry 101. If you want to be safer on the trail, learn more about being a responsible member of the backcountry community, or just have fun and get to know lots of great folks, then this is the place for you. You can even learn and practice packing skills on our infinitely patient "iron mule". Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for children 14 and under, and includes a bar-b-que lunch and all workshops. Reservations are recommended - call 858 278-9088. Grounds open at 9 a.m., workshops begin at 10 a.m. BCHC members may bring stock and may camp out Saturday night. About Backcountry Horsemen of California (BCHC), and the Caballeros del Sol Unit: BCHC is a non-profit organization made up of men and women dedicated to gentle use of California trails and backcountry and protecting stock users' historic use of wilderness trails and forage. Caballeros del Sol is one of several BCHC Units in the San Diego area. We work together with organizations of equestrians, hikers, mountain bikers, and others to protect trails and access to public lands in San Diego County. Caballeros del Sol focuses on backcountry user education, partnership with public agencies, and trail construction and maintenance.
