Backcountry 101 Clinic

Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 8:30 am - 4 pm - bar-b-que at noon

Granville "Granny" Martin Museum, Japatul Road, Alpine

This is a great introduction to backcountry horsemanship
with plenty for experienced wilderness riders as well.

If you'd like to be safer on the trail, know more about being a responsible member of the backcountry community, learn how you can take your "spare" animal along as a pack animal, or just have fun and get to know lots of great folks, then this is the place for you.

Subjects covered will include:

  • Gentle Use and Leave No Trace practices
  • Equestrian Etiquette
  • Equine First Aid and Medical Emergencies on the Trail
  • On-Trail Hoof Care and Shoeing Issues
  • Restraining Your Animals at the Trailhead & in the Wilderness
  • Packing Workshop - including load balancing and hitch tying
  • ... and much more!

You will be able to learn and practice hands-on packing skills on our infinitely patient "iron mule". BCHC members may bring their own animals and equipment for one-on-one coaching with experienced packers.

There is plenty of room on the 90 acres of the Museum - take your pack animals out for a "test drive" to try out your new skills.

Primitive camping (at no extra charge) is available on-site Saturday night for registered participants who are BCHC members. Anyone may join BCHC, either beforehand, or at the event itself.

Come up for the day on Saturday, June 23, 2001. Backcountry 101 grounds open at 8:30 a.m. Workshops begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and go until about 4 p.m.

Mark the date on your calendar, and be sure to tell your friends.

To encourage everyone to attend, the cost for the entire day is only $15.00 for adults and $10.00 per child 14 years or younger.

The price of the Clinic includes a bar-b-que dinner at noon on Saturday.

Cost is the same if you bring your own animals or just yourselves.
