Campsite Workparty on Rodriguez Canyon Road Campsite Cleanup - 9 December, 2000 - Across Banner Grade from the Banner Store, and in about 3 miles. Seven nice folks volunteered their Saturday, and their trucks, to clean up an old (burned down and trashed) homesite - the site will become a campsite for hikers and equestrians. In addition to the homesite shown in these photos there were more piles of junk in a small canyon downhill, and scattered around the surrounding area. Just uphill there is a spring, supplying water to the site.
The campsite overlooks the Anza-Borrego Desert, seen in the background. We're sure there's plenty of wildlife here, but what we saw this day were ants. Droves of ants. Multitudes of ants. Entire ant civilizations. Biting, stinging ants. Right in the junk we were cleaning up, of course. Items included a boat motor, water heater, water cooler, and endless piles of trash. Kathleen, and her husband Robert, discovered this site, and have taken it under their wings, getting it cleaned up so it can be enjoyed by campers for years to come. Some of the debris was left from the former home on the property, but much of it was brought in and dumped by irresponsible folks trying to save the dump fees. We think the grove of trees at this site are "Trees of Heaven", but it was hard to be sure, since they didn't have their leaves at the time. Done here, and ready to head to the dump!
