Board of Directors

The board of directors is responsible for providing direction and leadership, and managing the assests of the unit. Detailed descriptions of each of the positions are included in the bi-laws.

Tauri has been a member of Backcountry Horsemen for over 5 years, and an officer more than 3. She was very active in the San Diego Unit, and is one of the founders of Caballeros del Sol.

In addition to managing the unit and running meetings, Tauri produces our eight-page monthly newsletter, keeping everyone up to date on local issues, projects, and other events.

Vice-President Robert Coates

Robert is active in many aspects of the equestrian and trail communities. He is a past President of the California Horsemen's Association, and is on the Executive Board of the San Diego County Trails Council.

Secretary Linda Eskin

Linda is responsible for keeping the minutes at Caballeros del Sol meetings, and keeping the units records, including reports submitted by others (treasurer, public lands...) and any other paperwork.

Treasurer "Mule Mary" Hale

"Mule Mary" has been a fixture in Backcountry Horsemen since 1979, when she was one of the founders of the third Backcountry Horsemen unit ever. She also founded the San Diego Unit and is a past officer.

Mule handles all the financial matters of Caballeros del Sol, including bank and tax records, and bill paying.

The Member-at-Large is the membership's representative on the board. Marty is responsible for presenting any issues members have that require board attention.

Committees and Chairpersons

Public Liason Kathleen Hayden

Kathleen works directly, and coordinates the efforts of the committee members, in the polical arena, and reports to the group on political matters. This work is tremendously important in keeping public lands open to public use. Kathleen is highly experienced and effective, providing important guidance to Caballeros del Sol members working with public and goverment entities. She is responsible for Public Lands reporting, working with the BCHC State organization, and coordinating our group's efforts with others in the area.

Education Chair Linda Eskin

Linda's work involves designing and delivering educational presentations, workshops, and clinics, and supporting other members in these efforts. This committee addresses groups ranging from elementary school classes to horsemanship clubs and trail organizations. One focus of these presentations in on "Leave No Trace" methods. An educated community of users is key to keeping trails and other lands open.

As a State Director, Linda attends State level Backcountry Horsemen of California meetings, representing our membership.

Membership Nola Michel

Nola chairs the Membership committes, managing all work relating to membership, from helping interested people become Caballeros del Sol, and BCHC members, to keeping membership records, to collecting dues, and expanding the membership. When you become a member, this committee will send you a packet of information introducing you to Backcountry Horsemen and to the Caballeros del Sol unit.

Work Reports / Data Steve Randall

The Work Reports and Data committee is responsible for keeping track of work done by the unit (hours, locations...), and reporting the information to the State organization.

Webmaster Linda Eskin

Linda created and maintains the Caballeros del Sol web site. She is responsible for writing or soliciting appropriate content (event information, background papers on local issues...), and presenting the organization to the community in a professional manner. The site must be useful to Unit members, the public, legislators, the press, and others, and forward the mission of the group.

Insurance / Events Coordinator Position Open

This committee is responsible for scheduling Unit events, and keeping the other chairpersons informed about planned work parties, clinics, meetings, rides, and other events. They coordinate the efforts of the other committees where required for events. The committee is also responsible for handling the insurance for the Unit.

Public Relations Mike Ellison

The Public Relations committee, headed by Mike, gets the word out to the public about our issues and activities. Press coverage, articles in magazines, banners at events, and brochures explaining our efforts are all part of the job. Service Work Position Open
Your chance to help out!
This committee is directly responsible for some of our most important, impactful work - creating, maintaining, and improving trails and other facilities. The chair coordinates the efforts of members working on various projects throughout the county, working closely with the Public Liason Chair in determining and presenting the results of the work, and provides the Work Reports chair with an accounting of the volunteer labor provided on each project.

Ride Coordinator Bill Huston

Bill works with members who wish to host rides. He supports and coaches those hosts by providing information on leading rides, trail manners and rules, and working with them to sign up new members at rides.

Rides are wonderful social events, but they are much more - rides introduce our group to other trail users, make us aware of any problems with certain trails, and promote equestrian trail use. Trails that are not used are soon closed or overgrown - it's important to get out and enjoy our trails.

Equipment Manager Bill Huston

As Equipment Manager, Bill is responsible for cataloging and keeping track of the Unit's equipment, from shovels and water coolers, to heavy equipment. Members wishing to use the club's equipment in service work should contact Bill.

Promotions Nola Michel

The Promotions committee approaches individuals and organizations to solicit financial contributions to the Unit. Also arranges merchandise sales, raffles, and various event sponsorhips. The funds are used for sending Caballeros del Sol representatives to state level meetings, trails conferences, and government meetings, purchasing work equipment, and producing brochures and other materials to education local trail users.

Historian Sharon Haynesworth

Sharon compiles and organizes information regarding the history of the Unit.

Hostess Chair Marcy Millar

Marcy is responsible for seeing that someone brings refreshments to each meeting.
